Great Hammerhead Shark
The Great Hammerhead Shark or Sphyrna mokarran is the largest of the 9 different species of Hammerhead Sharks. It can grow over 20' in length and weigh in at nearly 1000lbs! This species of shark can be identified from the other Hammerheads by its nearly rectangular head. This fish can live up to 30 years and is found at depths of up to 250' in tropical and subtropical waters around the world. The Great Hammerhead Shark dines on fishes, rays, crabs, squid, crustaceans and even other smaller sharks. They locate their prey by using a series of liquid filled sacs referred to as Ampullae of Lorenzini. These amazing sacs are used to sense electromagnetic pulses given off by potential prey in the sandy bottom. This type of shark is considered dangerous, but is not normally aggressive toward experienced divers. Check out the video below for some fantastic footage of a Great Hammerhead Shark in action...
