Harlequin Tusk

The Harlequin Tusk or Choerodon fasciatus is one of the most sought after fish in the aquarium trade. It has striking brilliant colors that make it stick out from the crowd. Adults have eight blue-edged orange bands, three of which are on its head. In the wild, the most dominant female undergoes physiological changes to become a male. Each group consists of one male and multiple females. When the males dies or leaves the second most dominant female becomes the male if you can believe it! The rear of the body darkens with age as you can see in the picture above. The teeth of the Harlequin Tusk are actually blue which adds to its unusual appearance. This saltwater fish is found in the Indian Ocean and Australia around reefs. The Harlequin Tusk can grow to a maximum size of 12". Tangs and Trigger fish normally make a good tank mate for this type of fish. The Harlequin Tusk can be fed chopped fresh or frozen seafoods, mysis, brine shrimp, and krill.
