Australian Rainbow (Melanotaenia splendida)

The Australian Rainbow Fish is just one of the few species that have the scientific name Melanotaenia splendida. These fish freshwater fish have large eyes and dark bands that runs horizontally through their bodies. They can be identified by the two dorsal fins that adorn these beauties. This type of Rainbow Fish can grow to about 6" in maximum length.

Also known as the Western Splendid Rainbow, they are often kept in schools in an aquarium and are considered to be peaceful, easy to care for and quite hardy. The follow water conditions in an aquarium of at least 50 gallons are acceptable, 72-75° F, KH 10-20, and pH 6.5-7.2. An ideal aquarium would have plenty of plants and gravel substrate on the bottom. The Australian Rainbow Fish is one of the easiest fish to breed in captivity. Once the male starts to display its bright colors the female and male can be kept together in a tank with moss substrate on the bottom and a temperature of around 75F. It only takes about a week before the fry hatch, once this happens you should remove the parents from the tank and feed the fry an omnivores diet. As they grow older you can begin to fed them live foods and flake foods.

Praecox Rainbow (Melanotaenia praecox)

The Praecox Rainbow Fish or Melanotaenia praecox is a very easy to care for tropical freshwater fish. Also known as the Dwarf Neon Rainbow, Dwarf Blue Rainbowfish, Diamond Rainbowfish, and Peacock Rainbowfish, it is a schooling fish that is quite peaceful and is small at only 3" in maximum length. The Praecox Rainbow fish has very large eyes and is normally blue with red if a male and yellow if a female along its top and bottom. This fish is an omnivore and can be fed a variety of flakes, frozen, and live foods. Water temperatures of 64-72° F and PH Level of 5.8-6.5 is recommended. The Praecox Rainbow fish becomes very active when feeding so be careful, they have even been known to jump right out of tanks when going for the food! Make sure you have the lid tightly secured to avoid this problem. Other than that a larger tank is best suitable for this type of fish. Also floating plants and other hiding places are recommended.


Red Rainbow Fish


The Red Rainbow Fish or Glossolepis Incisus is a popular aquatic freshwater fish. It only grows up to 4" in length to it is perfect for a tank. It is normally found in Asia and Australia in the wild. This freshwater fish is easy to care for and is not an aggressive fish so it can be placed with other aquarium fish. This is just one species of the many different kinds of Rainbow Fish.
